"This year I learned the following terms and I applied them as I read some pretty great stuff:

allusion: reference
plot: the events in a story
theme: the big overarching idea of a writing
diction: author's word choices
syntax: the way the author organizes the words
in/direct characterization: the character actions reveal their true identity; words that describe the character's personality 
static/dynamic characters: a character who doesn't change over time; character changes over time
symbolism: using symbols to represent an idea
synecdoche
